Kaunas Technological University, Economics and Management Faculty, Quality Management Department

In 1995 Total Quality Management course for Bachelors at faculties of Management and Mechanics at our university was given. In 1996/97 TQM programme for master students and engineers at the Faculty of Management was started. In September 1996 the Government Of Lithuania approves of the National Quality Programme according to which variuos quality support means should be implemented, problems in Quality Management should be solved, new quality improvement methods should be creates, engineers of quality, quality management specialists should be preparesd, the knowlwdge in this research fiels should be spread in public. November 17th, 1997 the Department of Quality Management is established, Prof. Dr. Povilas Vanagas heads it.

The Department gives 13 courses, participates on 3 international projects, publishes 1 monograph, 3 manuals, three doctoral students publicly defend their thesis. The higher educated specialists are working research and pedagogical work at the Department. Staff of the Department visit universities and training centres in Ireland, England, Sweden, France. Quality Management is gaining popularity on the students. Graduates are working in manufacture and facility companies, are representing the institutions of government.

 Our mission is :

  • To expand the world-class teaching and research activity;
  • To use the results of iyr research for teaching engineers, master and doctoral students of Quality Management specialization;
  • To provide Quality Management information to society in general and senior staff of companies in particular.

 Functions:

  • Co-ordinating Quality Management curricula in University;
  • Research in quality Management areas;
  • Participation in national and international projects;
  • Consultancy.

The research is done in Management and Administration areas. The Department co-ordinates the following study programmes:

  • Engineer with Diploma (Quality Management specialization);
  • Master's degree (Quality Management specialization).

The staff co-ordinates the courses:

  • Total quality management;
  • Modern quality management methods and business excellence models;
  • Total quality economics;
  • Quality certification;
  • Standarts of European Community;
  • Implementation of quality systems;
  • Work study management and compensation;
  • Productivity Management.

The research area of the Department is quality management. A research group „Quality Management" is established (Prof. Dr. P. Vanagas is the leader of the group). Prof. Dr. P. Vanagas is the president of Lithuanian Quality Management Associaltion (LQMA) and headed the preparation group of the National Quality Programme. Within the framework of the programme „Total Quality Management: the development of methods and models to improve competitiveness of Economis Entities" (BMP-04A) the research group „Quality Management" does research. The goals of the research are theoretical and applied areas, the results of the research are useful for the Lithuanian Quality Management science and practice integrating within European Union Theoretical and applied research in this area.

International links and co-operation

PHARE projects:

  • TEMPUS (PHARE) exchange programme „Sustainable development and environment" (1994-1997) with seminars provided by specialists from universities of Angers (France), Greenwich (UK), Limerick (Ireland) and ERLES company (France);
  • TEMPUS (PHARE) project „Quality Management to Enterprises through Universities" (1998-1999);
  • „The Support Program for business beginners in Alytus district" (May - October, 2000).

The Department maintains relations in the areas of research and dtudies with the Universities of Angers (France), Limerick (ireland), Greenwich (London, UK), With the American Society for Quality, Parker Associates International (USA) and other European education institutions.
